OK...I live in Florida...don't have no fancy heaters on my hand grips....but when the temp gets below 60, I put a couple of those 'toe warmers' you buy in the outdoor hunting section of walmart, into my glove. A pack of them costs like, six bucks. Put two into your shoes.....toasty warm for about 6 hours. Only need them about three hours because by then, it warms up to over 65...they do nice in a back pocket also. Just saying, in case you are near a walmart and your fancy handgrips don't work.
I just had my grips replaced for my 2013 FLHTK, factory warranty just under the two year mark. they failed earlier in the year but I just had them replaced at 25000 mile service. Zero $$ was good for me. they tried replacing one, but it didn't work so they had to replace the other one too.... now they work great.
Mine are still working on my 2010 FLHTK with 25k miles and I've never been above 2 on the setting. I wonder if the guys with the failures turn them all the way up to "get 'em warm faster" then reduce the setting? Still they should work turned all the way up all the time for them to be considered reliable.
I used to own an GL1800 and heated grip failures were rare as I remember. Lots of heated seat failures tho on the 1800.

most of the time, I seldom went above 3 on the settings. I do a lot of early morning riding during the fall commuting to work. I crack them when it gets down to 55 or so, along with my electric liners....just in case.
installed 4 or 5 yrs ago no problems, set to 2 or 3 ,got the nostalgic (plain) ones after someone I know got the metel desighned flames ones and the metel would melt the grips and make them all sticky and melt, big mess and he removed them.
use them regularly, way convenient as others have said.Maybe the failures all live in alaska ? Pa its warm all year.
Still working on my 10 LTD @ 43,000 miles...never higher than 3...generally on 1 or 2 ! Put them on my wife's Strret Glide...failed in first 12 months...fixed under warranty and good up to now. She is pretty hard on them...slightest chill she has them on!
