Heated Grips Failing?

I installed my H-D leather heated handgrips 10 to 12 years ago and they have worked fine until this year. I noticed on my last ride that I needed to set them on "6" and it used to be that 6 was too hot at any ambient temperature. I generally have them set at 3 or 4 and occasionally on 5. Hope this helps.
I don't mean to highjack the thread but does everyone have Genuine Harley heated grips. All the people I know that have them say they are very hot and work well. I have heat demons and they are ok at best. I have wild ones chubby bars and the steel they are made of is thicker than stock bars and I find that since the heating element is inside the bars unlike Harley grips they are not really that hot. Thinking of changing them...

Hit by a taxi 2 months after I got my new 2009 FLTR, and broke my temp dial. I had needlenose pliers to change temp for the last 5 years...Had new ones installer this week, $400 labour, $200 for the unit...should have kept the pliers. Grips are grrrrrreat in Canada in February....
