I had my stock shields and Fatshoz mufflers ceramic coated over a year ago. Very happy so far.

I'm not a big fan of powder coating anything...at least the lower line stuff that people usually get...the better stuff, mil spec, and such, probably a lot better but that's not the quality point folks are usually aiming for. For an exhaust, no doubt and hands down, ceramic coating is better...in my opinion. Don't forget that the original chrome must be removed, and I reckon that's probably step one for a finishing facility, but make certain you check first before you commit...would hate to have your latest and greatest finish start flaking off because it didn't stick to the chrome they laid it over!

Of course they need to see the part first! How else are you going to be able to provide a credible estimate! Photos don't get the job done...they need to be able to examine the surface which photos won't bring out... come on now, that's the way it works with quality firms!

When coating any exhaust components ceramic is your best bet. There's no sense in playing around with high temp powder to figure out if your particular application will hold up. Not to mention, unlike ceramic coating, high temp powder coating offers ZERO thermal insulation properties.

As for whether to coat your pipes or buy them coated, you're generally MUCH better off coating what you have so long as the pipes are in good shape. If you do some research on "pre-coated" pipes you'll find that many folks are having problems with them peeling or failing. The reason for this is many of the pipe manufacturers that jumped on the "black pipe" band wagon are NOT coating companies and therefore are not set up to prep the pipes properly for these types of coatings.

With regards to "stripping chrome", this is a huge misnomer. Again, so long as the chrome is in good shape it can be profiled for the ceramic to adhere. If for some reason the chrome actually needs to be stripped, this opens up a big can of worms. The first of which is most platers will not strip exhaust pipes with any type of muffler in them. Second, stripping "chrome" isn't really the problem, its stripping the nickel below it. Its more expensive to strip and most stripper can't or won't do it. Many people try to blast the chrome off which usually just causes bigger problems. That being said, 95% of the time you can coat the pipes without having to strip them.

Glad I stopped to read this. Im about to venture out on chroming my factory ceramic heat shields on my supertrapp megashots. Fortunately for me I have a buddy with a chrome shop access.
I will agree it is cheaper to plate/coat than to buy new coated materials. S/T wanted $700 for new chrome heatshields, they say and I can somewhat agree the heat shields are the most expensive part of an exhaust system to buy.

I have had lots of pieces chromed and got ball park prices over the phone and just told him what i wanted chromed and he gave me a price and said it might be alittle higher depending on the shape of the piece and was always pretty close to what was quoted and he has a very good reputation here.IF i can get a ball park then i would know if it worth doing as i dont want to take the pipe off and find out it wont be worth doing.I would take it the guy i got chroming done but he doesnt do ceramic.
