I would bet dollars to donuts he gets the message now that idling for 45 minutes isn't good for the motor, but I'm sure there will be a few more that will want to tell him that anyway.
Riding on the shoulder of the road in Virginia to get around stopped traffic is a reckless driving charge. Same for splitting lanes. It just isn't fair that motorcycles don't have to sit in the stopped traffic too.
So that was your only choice, let it idle for 45 minutes?
Nope, life is full of choices, I made the wrong one due to ignorance. My other choice was to pull further to the right and shut it off rather than idling, turn on the flashlight and listen to my cell phone. Next time, if anymore than 10 min, it gets shut off.
.....Doesn't Harley idle these bikes for days out in the desert? Seems odd he would have problems.. although I too would have shut off the bike.
I think I saw that video too - but I believe it referred to the Vrod, not the traditional stuff.
Look, he had the bike for less than 4 months, so we don't even know if its his first Harley. Let's cut some slack here. What you or I would do as experienced riders is not relevant. I'm more curious if it's a post '09 bike, what happened to the engine management system.
First Harley, owned rice burners before.
2012 Limited, so I guess either the heat management has been turned off or the ambient temperature below 70 degrees the ECM didn't kick it on. I thought I read the outdoor temp has to be below 70 degrees for it to kick on. I will break out my service manual and check on that.
Air cooled engines are more likely to vapor lock when really hot. That's why when you stop for gas, don't let the pump prime, just go straight to start after you turn the ignition on. If the pump primes on a hot engine, there doesn't seem to be enough oxygen to light the fuel vapor in the cylinders. I'm also with everyone else in that 45 minutes idling a bike in traffic is a bad idea. Several times in years past I have pulled over and let the bike cool off.
Something else I just learned, there have been times that it was harder to start after filling up after burning a tank and warmer out. I will do that in the future also.
