Default This ever happen to you?

Was finishing up in the garage last night, and decided to do one last little project. I wanted to solder some connections inside the fairing on my Street Glide. Taking off the outer fairing, I dropped the lower screw on the right side. I heard it bounce around, hitting metal 3 or 4 times. I knew it hit the floor, but after about 5 minutes of looking, I decided to go back the project. I dropped the top screw on the left hand side - same thing, bounced three of four times, couldn't find it anywhere. What the hell? My garage floor is pretty clean, sometimes they can roll a long ways. I looked for a while, swept the floor, nothing. Finally, I found one lodged between the fork tube and the fender, what are the chances? Then, I found the other one - stuck in the same spot. I put the screws back in and opened a beer....photo attached.

Happens too much. Its always a pain when you drop a screw like that and you know it didn't hit the floor. Then you know that the real search is on.

Guess it didn't really hit the floor, but yes, it happens to all of us.

Could you have found them easier with a magnet, or were they stainless?

Yup, betting we have all done it.
Dropped one from the backside of the fairing about 6 months ago and still cant find it.
I always keep new hardware around due to rust that develops where the tool fits. I've found that aftermarket hardware generally last longer. Maybe better materials...
Glad you found them so easy.

Why...yes! Yes indeed, this has happened to me, thank you for asking! I simply either find the damn thing or find another one in stock and move on. Never have I found it necessary to post about it on the World Wide Web because I never thought anybody else would give a rip about it. I will have to give this some thought the next time something minor and inconsequential occurs to me. Others may find it fascinating...wow! An epiphany! So stoked!

Neat trick. Probably couldn't do it again if you tried. I usually find small screws I have dropped -- about a week later, and when I' not even looking for them.

That was a cool thing !!

I started using a magnet on the screwdriver to help stop this from happening, works pretty good.

I once dropped a bolt from the rear exhaust bracket, looked everywhere and could not find it. I gave up and found a replacement in the junk box but had a nagging feeling regarding the lost one. Finally looked in the "black hole" down by the drive pulley and there it was, sitting sideways between cogs on the belt. Wonder what damages may have happened had I not found it. Now I stuff rags to block that area when working on the bike, it is surprising how many fasteners have slipped from my bratwurst sized fingers that have dropped and bounced to this area.

I have forever been wanting to pick up one of the magnetic bowls. I have a couple telescopic magnets, one with a light on the end that have come in handy quite a few times, even if just blindly fishing.

Dropped on of the fairing screws the other day and never found it so I went to the local dealer right up the road a few miles, got four of them and a few days later found the lost one under the lift. Also picked up a couple of those magnetic bowls, but juist in case, now I got spares for next time
