Well not hip but back. I had two back operations within 18 months, went to PT and worked out at home, nothing crazy. That was a year ago. For me it took some time but I am back on the bike with the help of Apes, back rest and upgraded shocks. Slow and steady is the best way, don't push it and you will have many miles ahead.

Be Safe, JIM

My buddy, at age 48, had a left hip replacement done in fall 2013. He rode from NY to Sturgis and back Aug 2014.
Spring 2014 was a little iffy, (lifting his foot from ground to foot board was painful for a bit and he was worried but it finally came around... stick to the doctor's and Physical Therapist's recommended rehab regime and you will be fine.

Had both of mine done in 2007; one in May and the other in November. Had to give up riding before that as I suffered for days after the ride. Started riding again in the summer of 2008 and haven't looked back. I will be 70 in a few months and still go on rides with my son ( although the rides are usually limited to 200 miles or less) and have no pain. I am riding a 14 SG at present. One word of advice is to have physical therapy after and do the leg stretching exercises so you can wrap your thighs around that big Harley tank. Before my surgery in 2007 I had no room to move my legs outwards when sitting on the bike now I can move them a few inches from the tank together.

Don't have a new hip yet, but got a total knee in August '13. Was in pain and limping like a pirate, rode until the early morning hours of surgery, winterized the bike, and went in for surgery. I got the bike out in the Spring. For the first few months, I was a little tentative, but no real issues. Compared to before, I have a lot more strength in that leg and I am able to move the bike around a lot more easily now than prior to surgery.

Default hip replacement alternative

I have been told I need both hips replaced at age 51. I used to ride dual sport BMW GS models and switched to a Roadking when the pain got too bad. I am seriously considering stem cell hip regeneration. It is not covered by insurance and cost $9,000.00 but it is a same day procedure and no cutting. I will be making a decision on this soon. They tell me a replacement would only last me 10-15 years. That does not sound like too much fun, so I have been looking at this stem cell alternative.
