Upgraded fairing speakers alone won't increase the sound a lot. You'll need an amp for that. The upgraded speakers accommodate the additional power of the amp.
I understand for 2014+ bikes Harley stepped up the sound quality with their Infotainment system, compared to earlier years. I only know the current stuff (2014). That said, there are a number of good sound systems out there, some of which are mentioned in this thread.
I went with HD stuff (upgraded upper/lower fairing speakers, fairing-mounted amp) and I'm happy. My main deal was being able to hear the music at 70+ MPH, which my setup provides. I stuck with HD because I wanted a plug-and-play, dealer installed package.

I would like to thank everyone for their input. I was bouncing back and forth from hd to other brands. I think I'm going to go with the updated hogtunes and a rockford amp.
I was thinking of speakers in the bags also. So I'm going to do a 4 channel amp. My question is 2 ohm or 4 ohm?
I am currently running 8 Alpine Speakers and 2 Rockford PBR300x4 amps, I have also used JBL when I was only running 4 speakers. I have speakers in the fairing and the lowers and 2 6x9s in both saddlebags. They both work great! If you are running just the 2 fairing speakers or a 4 speaker setup, I would recommend the JBL because they are two ohm and will work the amp a little harder and will produce more sound. I personally stay away from Hog Tunes and Biketronics because they are selling their products at higher prices and stating that they are only for bikes. I made that mistake with my first setup from J&M.

Might as well save your money. You'll be doing another upgrade within a year, once you find out that you can do a whole lot better than Hogtunes, for not a lot more money. ARC Audio or Biketronics is WAY better.
Been 3 years now. I don't even remember! 6.5s in the fairing, and I think 6.5s in the lowers, and 5s in the rear pods. (5s were the only ones that would fit.) And a JL Audio amp in the tourpak. It's a GREAT setup. HUGE help by getting rid of the HK head unit, and doing a new Sony.
