I've literally internally wired 10 sets of apes and left the green connector in and never had a problem but some just have this problem and it's best to get the SE harness as posted many times above.
That or your black connector is totally mis-pinned. Which happens sometimes...
Codes basically state the your TBW/wiring is hosed.
I left the little green plug in placed when I switched out my bars. No issues at all. I left the plug in because there maybe a time when I would want heated grips. Good luck..

The green plug itself has nothing to do with heated grips.
