Default rear wheel spindle direction

Lots of issues with the rear wheel spindle, in the way that if you want to change the pads, you have to drop the whole assembly down just to get the caliper off.
Has anyone reversed the spindle to come from the left?

Is spindle UK-speak for axle? What year? On my 2012 it does come from the left.

Yes axle , its a 2000 Road King. Perhaps it was put in from the right before I purchased it as it has always been put back together the same way.

no the 2000 axle comes in from the right... can't see why it would hurt to put it in the other way - the adjusters are not part of that axle...

on the old axles...the were put in from the right for liability reasons- the axle nut is less likely to spin off if a bearing seizes or something like that ( I had it explained to me in the 80's).

Keep in mind that most models and the early FL's have the exhaust in the right side only.

many of us swapped the direction so that we could pull the axle out the left side without removing exhaust or pulling shocks to drop the swingarm below the exhaust.

I have a few hundred thousand miles that way on the evos and not a problem- i promise not to sue HD if I do.

For all the rear brake services I have done, I have not had to pull the wheel..maybe pull the shocks to drop the swingarm for some clearance- but i do not have the same model as the OP

Thanks for the info Mike,
if there is a split pin in the nut then chances of losing the nut is remote apart from it coming a bit loose.
I think I will stick with the left side for now.
Thanks.

The spindle nut should be of a castle design with a hole through the spindle so a spring clip to secure the 2 together can be placed.

The very same as mine, I used the spring clip but it hit the exhaust one day and ping'd out. Great just before an MOT test. When I got questioned on it, was amazed that I had always replaced it every time.
Now I have replace the shocks as the Ohlins were too long and the spindle hit the silencer.
Anyone want to buy a set of Ohlins shocks?
