Going from HD front end lowering to progressive drop-in
I wonder if it's a straight forward swap or would there be any complications??
I had the HD fork lowering kit installed by a shade tree mech friend of mine but he's no longer available and i don't know what/how he did it.
I only got about 3/4 drop which i don't think it's enough to compensate for the 21" wheel so now i want to bring her down a full 2" with a progressive drop-in kit then adjust from there depending on how it feel.
Having done my own bars, i'm confident i can do it myself but was wondering if when the HD kit was installed, was anything changed in the forks internals? Was anything removed that would have to be reinstalled for the progressive drop-in to work?
Should i just suck-it-up and give the Dealer the $300 he wants to do the install?
I did the drop in kit myself. The hardest part is finding the correct Allen wrenches for the top cap and the bottom bolt. Get those and the rest is easy...easier then doing the bars. The instructions in the kit are very good.
I had the Progressive Drop In installed by my Indy when I went to a 21/18 setup on my Heritage. I ended up only dropping the front end 3/4" as the ride gets a bit harsh when you drop the front by 1"+. Ron
The H-D kit replaces the dampner valves and the springs. The drop is achieved by the dampner valve being shorter, since it bolts to the bottom of the lowers, which causes the lowers to sit farther up the fork tubes. The spring is higher tension than the stock spring which helps prevent the front end from bottoming as easy.
If using the drop in Progressive kit, I would advise to set it at a 1" drop since you are already an inch down.
You have to do a full disassemble to get rid of the lowering spring on the dampener rod. If the Harley kit wasn't in there it would be a simple drop in install but since that kit is already installed, it is a not such a simple job anymore.
I used the Progressive kit. I bought it from Eastern Performance, had it in 2 days. There are some good videos on Youtube you should watch. It's not rocket science, pretty basic stuff. If you arent comfortable get an Indy to do it.
Thanks for your responses. I was afraid it wouldn't be that easy anymore because of the HD kit. I'm pretty sure i could do the progressive kit myself but now i may just give the job to the dealer and save myself the possible aggravation.
