Default Harley OEM Heated Grip Help -- Problem Solved

I have a 2012 Limited.
Changed the handlebars out.
Extended the the heated grip wires and fed internally.

Here's the problem.
When I got everything back together I went for a ride. Everything worked except for the heated grips. The grips did work great before the handlebar change.

I came back and took it apart, disconnected the wire to connect left and right hand grips, disconnected power. Unwrapped the electrical tape, un-soldier the extensions and then hooked up the black and red wires to a 12 volt 10 amp power supply. left grip heats.

Put the extension wires back on, and bench checked for power through wires to grip. Good so far, grip heats up again on the bench.

Checked the power connection under the fairing, I have 12 volts there. I connect the power wire to the grips back on the bike. No warming.

I check the electrical manual, says that if there is a short between left and right grip than left won't warm. Turn the bike back off, connect the wire (black and white) to the wire to connect left and right.

Wait 7 minutes, still nothing, checked the cig lighter, works. I thought maybe there isn't enough amps. I start the bike, 10 minutes of running not warming. I turn the throttle, no throttle. I check the connection to the TBW, not plugged in. Oh, good, problem solved. Turn off the bike, plug TBW connection in, start the bike wait 10 min, still not warming but I have throttle and check engine light went off.

What I don't know is...
1) Does the bike have to be above idle for the heated grips to work? I never used them with the bike off before.
2) Can I assume for now that the grips will work once it is back to together and riding since it warms on the bench with a 12 volt 10 amp power supply warms them?

Thanks
Jon

Subscribed. This type of problem is exactly what's keeping me from changing handlebars.

I was fiddling with my 2014 FLHTK a couple days ago, in the garage, not started, but turned on playing with my new helmet and headset, and phone.

Touched the grips and they were hot-ish...

They were on, but bike not running.

Don't know if this helps....

The left hand heated grip tests on the bench, when disconnected from the right hand heated grip, but does not work on the bike when still disconnected from the right hand grip?

...not sure could check under the cap on the right side hand grip - there is a (attached to the grip) small lead wired round plug that has very small pins (2) that plug into the TBW - (they would be easy to bend) they only go in one way like a socket - make sure there not bent/broken and plugged in
Like I said dont really know this might help - good luck

...if the heating element controller, located in the left grip, detects an open or short between the left and right grip circuit, the system is disabled. To enable the heating element control circuit, the ignition switch must be re-cycled after the problem is resolved.
- going to change handlebars myself - please, let us know how you make out

Did you plug the heated grip on the throttle side into the end of the TBW? Oh wait, that was asked above... Sorry.

It is possible a wire broke in the install process.
They are very delicate wires that seem to not like being messed with after being used.
I know people that have broken them on a new install.
As a rule I never touch them, keep them with the bike when sold and buy new for the next bike.

There are two small identical connectors in the fairing one is for the heated hand grips, and I don't remember what the other is for, but it is possible to get them connected backwards. Don't ask me how I know.
