Default Newbie Question

Just picked up my first Harley yesterday, 2009 Ultra classic...have what I hope is an easy question.

I am looking to set up a phone charger with hook up to the radio in one of my lower fairings.

Any tips/instructions on how to DIY this and how tough will it be?

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the Forums
And to the New ride.

on my 09 I use an iSimple interface and the iphone in a fairing pocket or magnetic tank pouch.

an easy place to draw power is the unused European-Spec position light wiring- orange/wht is +, blk is negative- this is atttached to the headlight wiring plug- it comes on with the ignition.

thanks, is there a specific ISimple interface you used and does it allow you to scroll music via the Harmon / handlebar controls? If so can you share the info

no, it a $25 audio interface that charges the phone too.

HD makes an ipod/iphone interface which allows scrolling via the handlebar buttons, but I don;t have it- I test rode a bike with and use required way too much time with eyes off the road

iron cross audio is another source.

you use apple or....

There are a lot of different companies that make handlebar mounts for phones. Get a SHORT cigarette lighter charging adapter and a cord to go from your headphone jack to the auxiliary port on the front of the radio. I listen to pandora until I travel somewhere without a signal then I switch to music I have on my phone.

Thanks for tip, but dont want my iphone on the handlebars....to much temptation to look at mess with it while riding.

I am looking to hardwire/hook into the back of the radio and sit my phone in the lower fairing. Out of site..........while it would be nice to use the handlebars to fast forward/skip...i can do without that and just use volume

Easiest and cheapest solution is a hogtunes 4 pocket windshield pouch. It has grommets for feeding aux cable and usb cable through on each end. Run usb to charger in cigarette port and run a short aux cable to radio through other end.

You won't be able to easily change songs, but you can change the volume with the handlebar buttons.

I use this set-up because i'm a cheap skate and it works just fine. On deserted roads in the middle of nowhere, I will sometimes pull the phone out and change music. But usually, my playlists are perfect.

Your only options to change the songs from the handlebar controls would be the HD iPod interface or the Iron Cross one. I installed the Iron Cross interface on my bike over the winter. It has worked fine when I have messed with it in my garage. Haven't had the bike out with it yet tho.

If you're looking to do exactly as described, just connect a phone and let it play music, you can use the unused position light leads to wire in a cig outlet that stays tucked inside the faring, then run a longish cord up to the radio through the faring. You'll already have the front of the bike off, take a few minutes and unbolt the radio from the supports so you can pass the audio cable through to the front of the faceplate; this way the audio cable is as hidden as it can be.

If you still want access to the phone while you're moving, definitely go the route of running a power wire up to the windshield bags if you have them. I personally use a bluetooth adapter that's wired into the radio's aux input, so the only wire I have to connect is power when I need it.
