I just put a new voltage regulator on my 2007 SG also put a new battery. When I fired it up everything seemed fine I was getting 14.5 volts. I was out riding Sunday on the highway and noticed my volt gage was reading under 13 volts also the battery symbol came on I have medallion gauges. As I was riding it spiked back up to 14.5 volt range then it would slowly drop down and symbol would come on and this repeated itself all the way home.
Do you think the voltage regulator is junk?
I put on a new stator a couple years ago when I had everything apart.
You might check the connection of the stator to the regulator and you might also use some dielectric grease in there for a clean contact. Also, as you rerouted the new cable from the stator, look real close at the cable where it might come into contact with any frame member or motor mount. It can chew through the insulation and short out which will kill your regulator too. That symptom will be noted by wild fluctuations in the voltage meter.
When I was plugging in the left side three terminal plug into the regulator I plugged it in wrong and started the bike there was no reading on the volt gauge so I shut it off plugged in my old regulator which worked. I started the engine and the needle on the gauge was in its normal spot.
I then put the new one on made sure it got plugged in right fired it up and gauge was reading normal.
However now when I ride the bike at a steady highway speed of 80 it starts to drop then slowly go up in cycles.
Do you think I fried the voltage regulator by miss plugging it in?
I don't think it would make any difference which way the stator was plugged into the regulator. All three legs of the stator provide the same AC voltage.
you will know only by methodically testing each part. the tech board/electrical has the diagnostic procedures ( as does the manual) in short- The voltage reading could be in response to a high load on the electrical system...or the charging system could be a problem. you can run through the tests and know for sure. This is the only way to know for sure which component has failed.
