Default Limited for a SGS...Mistake?

I have been riding a Ultra Limited for a few years, and I love the bike. I do allot of long rides and the bike is great, no real complaints. So a few weeks ago, my son buys a new SGS and of course I had to ride it. WOW is that a nice bike. The 100LBS in weight reduction from his to mine are sure noticeable, SGS? I figured I would need a Tour pak, so I could invest in the removable one. Other than the very obvious things, heated grips and lower fairings, e a what am I missing? Would this be a mistake? Anyone make this switch? As i mention I do like the long rides, I have done several Iron Butt rides and have a 48 State ride planned for August. Is this a mistake?

I don't know why you would. It's your money though. Buy the detachable tourpak kit. Buy some used lowers and get some heated grips if you want.

^^^^^That^^^^^
The detachable tourpack kit on yours will give you the same feeling on your bike and it's way cheaper than buying the tourpack for the SGS. JMO though.

2010 Limited with some stuff

My suggestion would be to trade your son for a day and take the SGS on a long ride. You may find that the novelty wears off quickly, depending on your riding style.

Only reason I suggest this, is I traded my friend my Ultra for his 2015 Road Glide for a 25 mile ride and although it was a sweet ride, my back started feeling it by the time I was done. Granted you could switch seats, and bars to your preferred riding position, but I've heard from more than 2 people, that the newer SGS and Road Glides don't ride a well? Again, my limited opinion and what I've heard. But if long rides are your thing, maybe talking your son into a trade, will help you with you decision?

Good luck, and ride with your son as often as possible!

Ok i'll be the odd ball here as usual. I personally dont like how the ultra and such look. Dont like the fender, the mirrors, back tour pack, rear fender, lights around it, shall I go on?? My point is I bought a 14 sg and then added what I liked to have for it. Lowers with speakers better seat for the OL. I will be adding heated grips one day and if necessary a detachable tour pack but so far i havent seen the need for one yet. I do long trips with no problems at all. If i have to pack that much on the bike I'll ship the stuff to my destination and carry enough to get me there. Just me and how I did it. Yes i probably paid more but again I got what I liked and liked to look at when not riding it.

I did sit on a ultra but had a hard time standing it up off the kick stand and knew i wouldnt want to be fighting the bike every time I got on it.

Batman.

MY 2014 SGS rides just fine so not sure about Ultra Rich's comment, but a SGS is no Ultra. There are way more differences then just a tour pack. If you were to buy a SGS and then go out and purchase the Tour pack and the lowers it would cost you more then just buying an Ultra.

I have a 2014 SGS and my Brother has a 2014 Ultra. Other then then the tour pack and lowers, the gages are different, Headlight is different, comes with the driving lights, heated grips. I am sure I am probably missing something. If I were to go out and buy all of that for my SGS I would be way over the price he paid for his Ultra. As a matter of fact, If I could do it all over again I would buy the ultra and the quick detachable kit for my tour pack.

If you wanted to do it up, go buy yourself a new Ultra and take that on your trip.

Ya could just unbolt all the extra crap off your limited to lose the weight but it wouldn't look as nice as a SG. As stated adding lowers and tour pac along with suspension/seat/bars to sgs would be more than a limited but lighter and better looking. If I was looking to buy new it wouldn't be a ultra/limited with all the gezzer junk they come with... and I'm old.

My wife had an SG and loved riding it around town but for the long haul I wouldn't want anything but an Ultra.
