Thank you. I'm supposed to take it into the shop in two weeks. (Both Mechanics were out with illnesses. One cancer, one gout) Their a bit backed up atm. Got a quote on the compensator. About 350.00 total if thats it.
Going to forgo tires if I need it replaced and wait for them over the winter.
I had the same noise as you on my 08 FLHTCU. It is the compensator. I just replaced mine last week. My old one was still in good condition. The old design is just crappy. I am not sure if you noticed how the bike shutters once you get going in first gear but the new compensator will take care of that as well.
You'll also need a new style rotor, and adhesive kit with caulk gun adapter for the install. I am selling my left over adhesive kit for about half of what it would cost at the dealer if you are interested.

I'll ask my mechanic and get back to you. I just seen the other compensator thread. Yep, same thing... I'll also ask if the price he quoted me includes the new rotor. If I can get the parts cheaper, he will go with them. But his parts are out of the Drag Specialties Book. Dont know if thats the same stock or not. I dont want to put the factory one back in and have the same happen in another 20k miles.
Try holding in the start switch just a half to one second longer. And make sure your battery has full cranking voltage and amps. Put a voltmeter on the maintenance charger line and make sure voltage is not dropping below 9.6 volts DC when cranking. Hot startups especially after parking in the sun can cause it also and that's normal for it to do it sometimes. The compensator is designed to smooth the impulses. It's normal for it to bang on uneven starts now and then. Of course not every time. If it does not do it all the times, it not the compensator.
Agreed. Make sure to give it enough time to 'set up' prior to engaging the start button. About 5 seconds after ignition and kill switch have been engaged. And yes; hold the start switch in a bit longer ...
You can order the compensator and rotor from http://www.kutterharleyonline.com/ for a nice little discount. I am not sure on the one that Drag sells. Harley has constantly been updating the compensator of the past few years. I think the latest revision was done in 2014.

Ok tried that. When it "clanked" and I kept the start button in, it sounded like it locked up and you could hear a release when I let go of the start button.

Got me scratching my head on that. Since when my occasionally clacks is when it starts up with a kickback or a half running start that dies. By holding the starter switch down just a fraction of a second longer, it helps to prevent this and also makes the starter last longer since every time you hit the switch, that is one less start you will get out of the starter due to wear on the large contact switch in the solenoid.
The compensator can only move either direction apx 30 degrees and even broke can never spin 360. What you describe is you spring is so weak (or broken) in it, that it locks up just turning over motor. Obviously, it must be broken if it does it ever time. However, you would think if it is that weak, it would clack ever gear shift or letting off the throttle hard. Surely a 1000 lbs of motorcycle winding it back is more than the force of turning the engine over.
Got me. Sure would like to hear it. Going to record a few of my starts. Won't take long for me to get a clack. I usually get one or so in 10 starts no matter what I do. Yesterday, it cranked, got a false start but I held on to the switch for a couple more cranks and it started with a little clack. Think, that was the starter gear being thrown back I believe.
