Default Driving myself nuts about oil....

I know this is over the top, but I am spending way too much time worrying about this for the 1k service on my '14 RK.

The dealer suggests putting Syn3 in the engine, and Formula + in the primary and trans.

I am thinking that Syn3 or Amsoil 20W-50 synthetic in the engine, Formula + in the primary and Amsoil Severegear 75W-140 in the primary.

The last thing I want is to become an oil expert, and I don't mind having the dealer do the work (Live in condo), but by the same token, I want the best I can reasonably get in my bike. Thoughts?

Sorry about yet another oil thread......

You mean tranny and not primary for the severe gear, yes? That combo will work

If it were me I would go with the dealer suggested fluids on the first couple changes then after you have a few thousand miles on make a change to another brand if you wish. What you are thinking of using is what I use but I did not make the switch until about 10k miles.

Easy decision. Any 20 50 MC oil will work in the engine, formula + in primary and formula + or any prpperly rated gear oil for the tranny.

As long as its the proper weigh your bike will be fine.

My 04 with in excess of 160k miles gets what ever is available where im at when it gets changed.

I have my preferences but sometimes the oil needs to be changed and it is not available. So i run what ever.

@dawg, Oh..yes, I meant trans...whoops....tnx

@2ropes, interesting that you suggest that.....my only issue is that a Harley dealer would naturally 'suggest' their products, and don't carry anyone elses...that being said, it may be the best way to go for now.....thanks.

I think I have the same HD synthetic in all 3 holes. I worry less.

As long as all three holes are wet, you should be good to ride.

I agree. The combination your thinking about will work just fine.

Ask a thousand of us and you'll probably get as many answers/suggestions.

I have the ESP on my '13 CVO Ultra so I don't want to do anything that could invalidate my warranty. I use SYN3 20w-50w in the engine and primary (as required) but I use Red Line Shockproof in the tranny.

In really hot weather I may upgrade the engine oil to Red Line 20w-60w.

The main thing (IMO) is to use a premium brand of oil that is made for the V-Twin air cooled engine and change it as required and to never run the engine low on oil.
