You better check again , their lifetime warranty is against material defect , IT DOES NOT COVER NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR , which is why you would rebuild a shock , with these shocks you would still want to rebuild them periodically

Thanks again for the additional info greggmig. I feel the same about have to drop an additional couple hundred every year or so to rebuild the shocks on top of everything else needed for these pigs.

Why do you feel you would have to rebuild your shocks every year?

I'm not sure on the exact mileage off hand but I guess the Ohlins are suppose to be rebuilt every so often.

What don't you understand ? Progressive shocks will have to be rebuilt too , no shock is designed to use forever without rebuilding it. You have moving metal parts inside them , this contaminates the oil along with heat breaking it down , if you don't rebuild them they will quit working effectively . The only difference is Ohlins tells you they need to be rebuilt up front , Progressive doesn't but when they stop working and you send them back they will be rebuilt and you will be charged because this is normal wear and tear , read the warranty.

I looked them up on line and besides the price being over $1200, thats more than a couple hundred over the 944. I also do not like where they put the reservoir, to me thats in harms way, especially from the passengers foot. I wonder if you could turn the shocks around and mount it behind the bags like Ohlins does.

I regretted buying my 970's until I got them dialed in. I did the install in my driveway with a bit of help from my friend. My buddy already had 970's so we set the springs the same as his. Well, he weighs 100 lbs more than me. My bike was unstable and wobbling though the twisties. I finally tightened the springs and dialed in the dampening. I love the shock and I love that I can adjust them on the fly. I don't think the reservoirs are ugly or intrusive. In fact, people are always asking me about the reservoirs.

There isn't anything about that I don't understand. I was just responding to bagman1.

944's on Amazon are about 650 while the 970's are around 850. Both from Amazon.

I have sent shocks and mono-tubes back and they have never charged me always have had great customer service, don't know if their policy has changed. For what you pay for these I'm sure replacement is factored into the price just like automotive shocks however auto shocks are a fraction of what bike shocks cost.
