Default Woops, I split the rear caliper

I was replacing the rear tire on 06 road king & couldn't figure how to get the caliper off so i removed the 3 bolts. I quickly realized that wasn't right because i started loosing brake fluid. Now what do i need to do, bleed the rear brakes?

Terry

If you just had some seep out, no. If you opened it all the way up, yes.

Check the reservoir at least and top off if needed.

Bleed them. If you haven't changed your fluid recently, replace it.

May as well bleed them. You've got it all apart now, hate to have to take it all apart again.

Did you figure out how to slide the caliper off the swing arm and remove the tire?

If that's a Harley dealer you're going to, you've probably saved a bunch just taking the wheel off for them; I've read some high figures just to remove a rear wheel at a Harley dealer, so you've accomplished something at least. We all learn by making an oops occasionally. It gets easier with experience, too.

I don't know about your neck of the woods but around here I can get a tire changed, me bringing in the new tire to an Indy for $25 to $40. Only time I have a dealership change a tire is in an emergency or I have little other choice. Last dealer tire change was many years ago at I am thinking $125 to $150 for a rear alone? Check with some local Indy shops unless you can afford the difference. I can't. Good luck on the brakes Terry but trying to help where I can. If that much fluid came out of the reservoir the only you have left is in the lines so just bleed the system. Much easier to have a friend help you with this. Just trying to save you some money here so best of luck.
