01 RK Starter Issue?

I am experiencing an issue that has me at a loss. About every 8-10 starts on my RK I turn the ignition switch and the starter button is dead. It eventually will start after I repeatedly turn the ignition switch on and off. When this happens my lights and instruments all work fine there is no other present issue.

But this last time it happened I was able to hear a single click under the left plastic panel under the seat on left side of the bike. That is where the starter relay is and it may be working fine but I'm not sure.

Anyone else have a similar issue? I did check for loose wires etc.. but haven't found anything. If the starter was bad wouldn't it quit working all together.

Yes, my 99 FLHT does it also, sometimes it works sometimes not, I put this solenoid button on the side of my starter and use it when my switch does not work, is $15

pull that side cover off and clean the contacts on the plunger and inside. probably corroded. takes 5 minutes to clean up with a scotch pad

Happened on my '04 Fatboy; usually switched it off & back on then OK. I just learned to live with it. Never found out what it was.

They sell them everywhere, even on e bay, $15 to $20, chrome or black, just take the cover off of the starter and put that on, if your switch does not work reach down and push the button, just make sure you are in neutral lol.

I had the same clicking problem with my starter relay switch, sometimes it would start, sometimes it would not start and click. Replaced the starter relay switch and it starts right up! Also bought a solenoid plunger switch just in case it happens out the road.
