Just got back from a 5 day trip and on the last day, my speakers just stopped working. The head unit was still on, it was playing the CD, but no sound was coming from the speakers. When I stopped for a potty break and restarted the bike, the speakers started working again...for 15 minutes or so and then stopped again. Then after the bike was off for a while, the speakers started back up again before going out, again.
Anyone ever had this issue? Is it the result of the speakers going bad, the head unit going bad, or a wiring issue?
I planned on upgrading the speakers soon, anyways, but if this is a head unit issue, I'll need to change that too and would rather do it all at once.
common problem with the head unit. do a search. I just had the same problem. Very soon it will quit completely, mine did.
option 1 - send the head unit to Iron Cross Audio. They will fix it for $250 flat fee.
option 2 (my choice) - saved the $250 fee. bought a Kenwood system and amp with upgraded speakers from biketronics for $720. Sold my xm and ipod modules and boom speakers. net cost = $80.
You can pull code from pre 14 HK head unit. When the radio is not working, select FM then turn bike off ( without turning off radio ). Then press and hold two of the soft keys ( the numbered buttons). While pressing the two buttons, turn ignition to ACC and continue to hold the buttons until the radio enters diagnostic mode. You should see a code. I'm going to guess the code is B2017 Fr spkr open. It may be the speakers but most likely the head unit. Since speakers work sometimes, they're good.
Iron cross will repair.
If you have ESP, $50 to have radio replaced (like $340 to get refurbished radio from HD ).
If bike is 2006 thru early 2011 ( pre 10/7/2010) service bulletin M1289 refers to the handlebar clamp bolts needing to be replaced with ones that have a shallower head. The radio vibrates against the stock bolts. The bolts are part # 12600003 and the forward 2 need to be replaced.

Thanks! I figured it was probably an issue with the head unit. The bike is an early 2011 model...but not sure if before or slightly after that date, so it could be that bolt issue. But I do have the ESP and will just have the dealer inspect it and see. If the head unit is going out, I will see if the ESP will just cut me a check for replacement cost and I'll go with a new head unit when I upgrade the speakers.

Never heard anyone getting "cut a check". I do know some who had dealers do upgraded work then pay the difference. ESP company ( not Harley) pays dealers directly.
Easy to tell if the bolts are new style or not. Pre 10/7/2010 bolts are Allen head, post are torx head.

That's pretty much the system I was considering to begin with, though I haven't seen it for that low a price.
So if the head unit is actually going on the putz and I can get the ESP to cut a check for the replacement cost of the HK unit I will likely go that route.

I figure it would be worth a shot. But I've never heard of it before either.
