Actually, hoping for more like 15 hrs. Have ridden over 700mi in a day, but never actually hit 1k. Those of you who have done it, anything you would have done differently?
Plenty of sleep the night before, plan your stops such that they are for gas, pee, and hydrate (water or sport drink). Make them quick but also long enough to stretch the legs, walk around. 5-10min tops and about every two hours. If mostly highway your golden, if back roads... well ya just loose a lot of time on back roads when trying to make tracks. Also, where long sleeve shirt to keep sun off you to prevent fatigue. Good luck! Last iron butt I did was 1000 in about 16 hrs, felt fine after.
Get up and get gone early, back in time for a late supper. Stop to stretch legs once in-between fill-ups. Stay hydrated and eat light. I killed at least one bottle of water at each stop, but I was riding through AL/MS/LA in August when I did mine. It was just a bit warm/muggy... Don't get sunburned. Earplugs. I didn't use any, and wish I had. Ears were ringing for a while after my ride from 16 hours of wind-noise.
Great info! I am planning on all interstate...40, 55, 44 (arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma). Think I have a good route with plenty of choices to stop, fuel, snack, stretch, etc. Will be the first long trip on the new Road Glide, think the stereo will be a godsend (previous bike was a Road King).
Aspirin and B12 pills every 4-6 hours. You'll sail right through it.
I've done it three times and those two little deals work more magic than any else I've tried.
Ride it like you stoled it for the first 500-600 miles. Start early, wear moisture wicking undergarments, stay hydrated. One of the most important things that most of us long distance riders use is compression stockings. Most are laughing at this point but, IT WORKS! FT
Gather receipts for the entire trip. Don't speed. Have the witness for your start and ending. If things really go bad, you can always quit the ride and try it again another day.
I did my IB ride in 2010 from Sierra Vista, AZ to Peco, TX and back. Mostly 75 MPH speed limits with a little 80MPH limits in TX. Still took me about 17hrs.
