Shifter Centering Spring Broke?

I called the local dealer for fun - the service writer said 8 hours labor - "at least a Grand" total price with all the material. I think I'll do it myself.
Timing sucks - I passed up a 2002 Dyna Low Rider for $5000 last month - would have been a good ride that I could probably sell for what I paid in the spring...

Just a trouble shooting suggestion: Disconnect the shift rod at either end and see if the transmission shift arm will center as it is supposed to. Lack of lube on the front shift shaft (the one with the heel and toe shifters on it) might be making it bind and make it seem that the centering spring has failed. Easier to lube that shaft than all of the work you are considering, especially if all of that work doesn't fix it.
