The brake light on my 05 road king is going on and off all on its own even if the bike is just sitting idling in the driveway. If I tap on the front brake lever it will go off for a second, then comes on again. Is there any adjustment in the switch that makes the brake light come on? I was thinking the switch ran off fluid pressure, not too sure though this is a new problem for me. I really dont want to take it to the dealer it has to be something simple(I hope), and i definatly dont want to get rearended. Thanx in advance for any fixes or even ideas of what the problem could be.
You may need to replace your rear brake pads. My RKC did the same thing when the pads got low. Do you have cruise control? It will not work if the brake light is on. The pads are only good for 6000-8000 miles, depending on your driving. I would start there. Good luck.
Could be a few things, first have you changed to chrome controls or had the brake handle off for maintenance of any kind. It could be the stoplight switch which is behind the brake lever causing the problem here. It is common for the tab that sticks out of the switch to be broken off when replacing the brake lever / master cylinder if you don't use something to hold the lever in the partially compressed position while replacing the cylinder or reinstalling the lever. It could also be the switch itself has moved out of position and the handlebar controls have to be opened up to reposition the switch. Either of these things will cause your problem.
the front brake light switch is a mechanical button switch, does not
rely on fluid pressure to activate.
If you hand the right controls apart and didn't do it by the book (Card board
shim etc) you may have damaged the switch.
Or the switch just may be faulty.
Or handle assembly may be loose and vibrating enough when at idle to momentarily
activate the switch.
Guess you just have to inspect closer and see.
