I decided to change tranny fluid and flush the tranny to try and remove any metal residue. It seemed to do the job but stopped working again. My next step will be to just replace the sensor.
my 00 ultra did this I cleaned the battery posts I had a little corrosion around the connection. I had cleaned sensor and it was better for an hour or so, on a 2 hour ride, when I got home I cleaned battery connections and charged battery 2 years and still good.

I have a 2002 Road King, engine would die when stopping at red light / stop sign , speedometer needle would go crazy or not work at all, turn signals would not turn off automatically, odometer would not register miles. I cleaned speedo sensor after removing part from engine side and everything has worked fine now for 6 months. Did buy new sensor but part not real easy to replace.

I have had similar problems with my 2001 FLH. After cleaning and finally replacing the sensor, with continuing intermittent problems, I replaced the whole sensing wire from the sensor to the speedo head. No problems since. Must have had a wire going open in the harness.

Update on my last post...I replaced the sensor which wasn't too hard. I had to pull the battery off to get to the wire connector but it's a pretty simple 15 minute job. I did notice that the new sensor wasn't magnetized like the original one I pulled out...500 miles of riding so far and still working great! The sensor was only $62.00 from my local Harley dealer.
