Had a lighter die on my 99. quick trip to dealer, had one in stock, plugged it in and fine - first tested a lighter from friend's bike in my socket first.
other thing, sometimes the wires are crossed on the backside of the lighter socket (+/- reversed) from the factory. the lighter doesn't care but accessories plugged into the socket do care. And some accessory plugs (phone charges, gps plugs, etc) have a little fuse in the plug.
you didn't give much info other than "it doesn't work"
Easy diagnosis
1) Remove lighter from socket
2) Use test light to check for power on the center conductor in the socket.
2a) If it has power, replace lighter insert
3) If no power to center conductor, check fuse. If fuse is bad replace. If fuse is good next step
4) Remove fairing front and check for secure wiring to lighter socket.
5) Check for power at the wiring to the center conductor. If it has power, double check connection.
6) Check for good ground at the outer conductor with said test light.
7) If you have power and ground, replace lighter assembly. If it still doesn't work, quit smoking, it's a sign
I have a cigarette lighter in my aftermarket fairing, the only problem I have with it is it keeps falling out and hitting the windshield of the car that is tailgating me.
