You have to Auto Tune the base map provided for your bike and set up you have. The FP3 needs a starting point to tune from.
UNLESS you are running all V&H parts and they have a canned map that matches your bike. Then the canned map has been dynotuned by them (V&H) on a setup the same as what you have. At that point there really is no need to run an autotune since you likely already have a really great tune.

I bought the FP3 for the Auto Tune feature it has.. My bike ran great on the map that was provided from V&H but I wanted to see if the Auto Tune would fine tune the map to better fit my bike and set up Im running.
No one knows our own bikes like we do.. After I Auto Tuned my map I can feel an improvement through all gears w/ HP and Torque... I figured that if my map didnt need fine tuning to match my bike and setup that I wouldnt have anything learned from the Auto Tune Grid..
When I finished my Auto Tune I had 52 learned cells on the grid so that told me that the Auto tune found improvements in the map to match my bike..
I feel that even if someone has the same make/model and stage set ups on their bikes they will all perform different, so some might benefit from the Auto Tune and some wont.. JMO
I tried Autotune it didn't make any difference didn't learn cells in lower or higher RPM, mileage wasn't great and occasionally popped. Loaded the canned map bikes runs good high 30 to low 40 MPG. I think autotune will help if there is no canned map or like V&H says some countries don't have required octane or just lower tier gasoline or can't find all the necessary hardware for canned map.
Just done a 115 mile ride this morning.. Not bad for an average MPG..

Mine also showed high 40 MPG on the phone but not really after refueling and calculation only got high 30 or low 40 with either canned map or autotune, but I'm very pleased with that fuel mileage normally I get 34 to 37 for my bad riding habits.

That feature on the FP3 is totally bogus and FOS. I have toyed with it from day one and it is NEVER even close to actual mpg. Mine is consistently reading anywhere from 3-5 mpg higher than actual. I even went into the general section and lowered the mpg counts a bunch of times and still couldn't get it close ... all that did was screw up my range to empty reading on the odometer. Stock counts are 1989, I was all the way down to around 1000 and it STILL read high. I love my FP3, but I pretty much gave up on the mpg feature, it's nothing but a gimmick that doesn't work right. Compare your's to your actual mpg on paper and I bet it's high too.
