Brothers,
Going to put the progressive monotubes in my 05 FLHTCUI (Ultra) tomorrow.
I've read and researched, watched the videos, but I'm missing something.
I've read about using a PVC tube cut in half to drive out and install a new fork seal.
The videos and instructions don't mention this.
Can someone please enlighten me on this?
I have all the tools needed including the LONG allen socket sets, mm and SAE.
But if I need fork seals, I'd like to hit the HD dealer today, they're closed Sundays as it's seasonal up here.
Personally, I took a 2" pvc conduit coupler, filed the divider out of the middle. This will slide over the fork tube and you can use it to drive the seal in. You can use a short length of 2 1/2" pvc pipe to slide over and hammer on, but I found it wasn't necessary. I just used the coupling and by hand tapped the seals in. Once their started you can use your body weight to fully seat them.
Yes you will need a driver of some type to set the new fork seal - and it's a great idea to replace it while you have it apart - I bought one on Ebay for like $25
To remove the seal, don't need anything to drive it out the old seal. Just use sanction and the assembly attached it (which will still be inside the fork tube at this point) to lightly tap it out but pulling apart the entire fork. Just use a series of light but firm taps and it will come apart. You will understand when you get there.
I used a PVC tube to use a seal driver. Just make sure you cut the PVC square (or at least the end that will touch the seal). This way, it will apply nice and even pressure to the seal. Does not take a whole lot to seat the seal.
Take your time with the install. You will probably send more time getting to the forks than actually working on them (Road Glide is worse).
Use all clip spacers in the Monotube for a nice firm ride (of if your always loaded up or heavy). Go with 2 spacers if you want a little cushion to the ride.

Makes sense, thank you. I was only given 4 spacers total.
Even with 2 clips in each, the ride has to be leaps and bounds better than stock!

If you have not already started on your forks, look at this video, around the 1:10 mark and it will explain the pvc tube.

Now that, my friend, is EXACTLY what I needed.
Probably going to tackle it this weekend. With almost 40K and 10 years on the clock, I'm just going to replace the seals instead of try to salvage them.

Cheers my friend!!
I replaced my own forks with chrome lowers and installed the mono tubes, using this you tube post. It has 3 parts to it, I think.
