I have a '99 Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Was replacing my rear brake pads, and now having issues getting the caliper back on. Seems like the piston is too far out. Both shims, pads and retaining clip have been installed. Does the piston need compressed or bled?
I'd spray some brake clean on it before I pushed it back in.
Also scrub clean with an old tooth brush or similar.
Be aware that when pushing that piston back that brake fluid will be pushed back into the reservoir, so remove some of that fluid first, otherwise it may overflow. Once everything is back together flush your brake through with new fluid and top up the reservoir. Check the lid of your reservoir for the correct grade of brake fluid, which is probably DOT5 - do not use any other type!
You know, I always see recommendations to use brake cleaner on the pistons before pushing them back into the caliper bore. Just a word of caution before doing so... Most brake cleaners contain solvents that can be brutal on seals, many even have cautions somewhere in the fine print to protect rubber parts from the spray. I personally do not use brake cleaner for this task, but rather, water, detergent, and an old toothbrush is effective and much safer for that piston seal.
Brake cleaner is great for the metal parts but it's not a great choice around rubber parts.
