Default Test drove a 2001 RG SE

I finaly test drove a 2001 SE RG at the local dealer which was a local trade. The bike ran well with plenty of power, braked good, no strange noises. The past owner had all the service done there. The bike had been washed and the gages were foged up some which cleared up for the most part. After the 20 min ride there was some oil that ran out of the air cleaner on the chrome engine cover which may have been mixed with water as that is what it looked like. There was also some oil wicking at the very top whrre the engine joins the trans. The former owner was there today and he said the gages always did that after a rain and the oil at the top of the engine and trans has also been there. This is verified by a past service report dated back to 2003. Its not dripping or is even wet its just wicked up some and shown up on the aluminum casing. The owner siad the bike never used oil and the oil from the breather has never accured befor so it maybe due to being washed. I have read reports of oil from the air cleaner as this is where the crankcase is vented. Anyway they accepted my offer on the bike but I told them I was also looking at a 2000 SE RG but I would let them know for sure in a day or so. I realy like both bikes but this one is a local and the 2000 is not so I have to travel 1000 mile to even test drive it. Both have about 20 milage. I may test drive the 2001 again to see if the air cleaned oil is water or venting. How much should be expected to drip from the AC?
Note: The ride was great, best bike I ever rode, great power ( and I did get on it).

I had a 2110 FLHTC/I and road the hell out of it for 37000 miles. Yes my gauges fogged after I washed itand yes they cleared after it warmed up. If it has a K&N or a SE A/C mine did the same thing...would drip a little red oil after washing it or after I serviced the filter. The K&N's are washable and have a tendency to drip a little...no biggie.

The A/C oil was probably just from the wash, usually if there is any oil from the vent it will stay in the air filter, maybe a drop or two onthe cover. It would have to be really bad to come all of the way out to drip on the engine. I have seen that, but it's not typical. The oil you describe comeing up between the engine and the tranny is probably not oil. If your are talking about the little black goo that is on the seam. I have that on my 04 RG also, and I believe that to be more along the lines of metal that is pushed up from the mating surfaces of the tranny and the engine rubbing together. It took about 20k miles for mine to start showing. I have cleaned this up before and it has a shiny, pastey texture to it. It doesn't look or feel like oil once you get your hands on it. I have 40k miles on mine now, it hasn't been an issue.

After 2 years of reading this site (and others) and every magazine available I bought the 2001 SE RG today (Blue). The only change I need to make right now is a shorter windshield as the previouse owner is about 3 inches taller than me (I am looking through the top section of the shield). I may just trim this one.
I am also going to detail the exhaust system with new stainless steel hardware as they are rusted which I found to be pretty common. You can only see it if your laying on your back but as I build show cars I do alot of that. Are there stainless kits available?
Anyway, thanks, for the help.
