I replaced the shift arm on the shift linkage that connects to the pawl shaft ( was loose and the set screw was stripped) and that was not the problem . I went through all the external linkages and that was the only problem seen . Took all that apart , cleaned it up , lubed and reassembled . It does shift better but the problem still exists . Believe me , I don't want to rebuild it and I have been thinking of other possible causes but having checked all that out and with it only doing it between second and third , I'm running out of other possibilities . I do appreciate the help . Any other ideas of what to check ??? Maybe where the pawl rod comes out of the trans is hummed up ?? Still wouldn't explain just one gear and running through gears by hand, it does seem like the springs are strong . Frustrated I cannot get it to act up while up in the air running through the gears .
Yeah . That was a good write up man. I will replace the spring in the top of the shifter pawl and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't , I will most likely wait until the cold weather comes and tear her down and inspect everything . Hopefully it will be a burr . And a little sandpaper fix . A friend that used to have a shop mentioned that was his belief on what it was . Just a pain in the *** when you think you hit 3rd and release the clutch and get shoved into the gas tank lol
It doesn't do it all the time but every now and then ill go to shift into 3rd and it does feel like the shifter hasn't returned to center to reset . Everything on the outside of the trans seems to be fine. The spring on the " shifter pawl" seems to be fine ( is that the one in the trans housing you mentioned ??) Just thinking if it was a spring , would it not do it all the time ? In other gears ?
Might just be your toe! How about you continue riding, but make sure you change gear firmly, so the positive stop mechanism in your trans resets correctly? I suspect you may simply be rushing that change, or not following through fully. If that doesn't work out then follow up the spring suggestions above.
Up until the last couple times it's happened, I always thought that could be the case. I have been more aware of foot placement (making sure my foot was letting it reset) and shifting hard enough . But the last couple times I actually was able to realize it was happening before releasing the clutch and the shifter just feels limp . And once you let it fall again it clicks up just fine

'Hoping that it is a simple fix for you, if not, I have a low mile 6sp gearset out of an '09 FL available (went to a DD7). PM if interested.
