According to my dealer that elongated nut is a lock nut. My headlight doesn't have one but my auxiliary lights both use them.

could be, but mine is not- if you look at earlier pic, you'll see traces of locktite on the threads of the machine screw.

a locking nut would need a nylon liner ( nylock), however nylocks do not tolerate torque- the nylon will just pull away from the steel, so not suitable in many applications.
There is also no mechanical locking mechanism attached the the nut- on my version of this- yours may be different.

Your stock one is sitting under that trim ring. For fun, here's the installation instruction for the flat type, same as the visor style. http://www.harley-davidson.com/app-c...ts/-J01369.PDF

The oem nut, in the oem package, showing the M4-0.7 thread pitch.

It's a crude fitting and mount, almost anything will actually work.

When you go buy the parts make sure you get a screw and nut that work together. The nut pictured above is metric and it looks different than the one sold to me. The one I have is a 8-32 screw and nut. The nut is longer and has more taper at the end of it.

As I noted above, the dealer called it a lock nut, but I am not sure it really is. As Mike noted it doesn't have a nylon insert and it doesn't appear to actually be a lock nut, just a long nut with a tapered end on it. I didn't try to thread the screw all the way through it when I verified they work together. When I installed it I could feel it pulling the trim ring tighter but again I couldn't say for sure that I could feel the extra torque a lock nut would require. I didn't Loctite mine, maybe I should take them apart and add the Loctite before I loose something.
