I have narrowed my search down to 2 bikes , an 06 EG classic and a 07 EG ultra. The 06 has 21kmiles ,and is in need of minor cosmetic work. Other than a busted passing lamp lens & the paint needs a good buff job ,the bike is in good mechanical shape, It has 2 new tires ,new battery , SE slip ons & KN air filter , but it does not have cruise control, and I know it's not available. They want $5600 . the 07 is an ultra with 7800 miles on it . It needs a new front tire, the original tire is still on it. Wants $9000 which includes 3 helments , an intercom system and the shock pump. this bike has everything except ABS. Having said that, I plan on riding with the local HOG chapter ,one up, 95% of the time, and was gonna take the tour pack off either bike. My question is , is an 07 worth $3400 more cuz its one year older and has a cruise control. and I have given thought to the 96ci/6spd combo vs the 88ci /5spd combo and the 88 cam shoe problems. Give your thoughts ,because I'm currently on a 2000 heritage w/o cruise anyway. trying to move up to a more comfortable ride
Flip a coin, one is a Classic and the other is the Ultra Classic which accounts for part of the price difference. FWIW I own an 06 Ultra, back when the 07's came out I road an Ultra for 150 miles. I didn't care for it, I choose to keep my 06 and I'm happy I did.
Honestly, if it were me I'd look for an '08. You get the same frame, larger fuel tank, larger engine, and 6 speed transmission.
A buddy has a '06 Classic. I can't stand to ride his bike over my '08 Ultra. If you want cruise (I'd recommend it), don't settle.
I would be a little leary of bikes that old with that few of miles. A setting vehicle or bike can lead to damage when you start riding it often. Been there and done that with a low mileage older vehicle. I wouldn't be scared of a '08 with 30,000 miles. Just make sure the maintenance has been done.
I have an 07 ultra and love it, it has removable tour pack ,lowers and everything else an ultra has. When I'm in town I remove all that and change the seat but if I'm going on a road trip it all goes back on.
I would go with the 06. It's still low miles, and that's dirt cheap. I just paid 6400 for my 04 ultra with the same miles and I thought THAT was a good deal. Good luck with what ever you decide on.
I have an '07 RK. The cost difference has a lot to do with the 6 speed tranny. My son does a lot of buying and selling Harley touring bikes and he says that it is much harder selling the 5 speeds.
BTW, the '07 still had the 5 gallon tank.
Personally, I wouldn't even consider the 5 speed anymore on a touring bike.
I did, however, have one major problem with my '07 motor. One of the piston skirt oilers broke off at barely 40,000 miles. The motor shut down right away when the pieces of the oiler broke the crank position sensor. I've talked to a number of HD mechanics and none have ever heard of that happening, nor have I found any owners who have had the same experience, so I'm guessing I just got to be the 'lucky' one. (Wish I could be so lucky at the lottery). At any rate, it wouldn't stop me from have another 2007 motor.
One odd thing, though - is the front tire worn out, or just dry rotted? I've never had a bike that I didn't get at least 20,000 miles out of the front tire.

I've go no dog in this fight - just experience with both bikes. Sent you a PM - check your mail box - so as to not ruffle any feathers.
IIRC the 2006 was 88/5 speed, the 2007 was 96/6 speed, and 2008 was 96/6 speed with a 6 gallon tank & TBW. As for customizing the bike I wonder if there are more parts available for the 2006. The 2007 96/6 speed 5 gallon tank was a one year model. The 2008 96/6 speed 6 gallon tank & TBW & I think the rear tire also went to a 150, was also a one year model. In 2009 you had the frame change. Just something to consider if you plan on making changes to the bike.
