I guess my point to this post was to pass along some info on what works when you have flat with laced wheels based on actual experience. Laced wheels were the only choice for many years and it didn't stop anyone from riding. Wasn't a very tough decsion to stop and help this guy that day, it was either that or go on home and get on the business end of the lawnmower.
I've read so many stories on this forum about flats and laced wheels that seem to come from riders who don't have any actual experience that I wanted to pass along what I saw work to temporarily solve the problem. I've read how laced wheels are supposed to produce a hollywood movie-type explosion when you have a flat but based on my own personal experience, that isn't what happens.
I have the laced wheels on my RK because that's the look I wanted. In the next year or so I'll probably end up with a RG or a UC but I'll have the cast wheels on either of those. I'm not one of those guys who's going to be worried to death about a flat just because I've got the laced wheels. And i'm not carrying a plug kit, 6 bottles of CO2, a can of fix-a-flat and a 12 volt compressor. Geez, I've only got 2 saddle bags. If I have a problem, I'll deal with it. Help is usually only a phone call away. Or hopefully help will arrive on 2 wheels.
Great stuff neckball. Very Kind of you to lend a hand and take time out of your schedule. Good lesson for all of us and to keep in our mind that FAF might help out even tubed flats and to pay it forward!
If you are going to use a product to help prevent problems in the "Future" I would go with http://www.ride-on.com/prod_mot.asp
before Ibought "slime". Ride-on is maily for tubless tires butwill work on tubes also, justnot as good... checkout both and you choose..
