I have a Galaxy S4. Might try a different charger. The one I use is putting out 2.4 amps I think. Might try to find one that's 1 amp to see if that makes a difference.
I'm not too sure about the 1 amp. It might barely keep your phone charged. I use a USB power port hooked up to the accessory plug under the seat and run to the bars. I use it to power my GPS or charge my iPhone no problem and it's rated 2.1 amps.
Does your phone get hot as well when you charge it at home? Could be the battery as the Li-ion gets warm with too much juice.

I think the 1 amp is standard for the iPhone 6s Plus which is what I use and my iPad uses the 2.4. I can charge the iPhone with the 2.4 also but it charges much quicker and gets much warmer.
When charging at home I don't have a problem. Even with the car charger I don't have a problem. With google maps I only have a problem while charging at the same time. If I run google maps without the charger it's fine. Looks like it might be time for a phone upgrade. Till then I just may tryout the stand alone gps unit for directions and the phone for just streaming music.
Guess I should of said that differently. When I plug my phone in to keep it charged while using the gps it overheats and shuts down. I was really wondering how people charge their phones while using gps and keep them from overheating.
Set the screen to shut down unless a turn is coming up.
I have my phone on GPS for 10-12 hour at a time with no problems whatsoever. There's no need to have the screen illuminated when you're riding for three hours without a change in route, and that's the biggest use of battery power.
