Default Helmet issues

This might be the best place to post this but I'll ask anyway.

I typically wear half helmets. For a long time I just wore a peanut shell then switched to a dot half that fits great.

I need a 3/4 though to protect from the sun and elements a bit more. I cannot find anything to fit my coconut. Last spring I purchased the HD 3/4 (forget the model) and had to shave a good bit of foam out of it. I still have an excruciating hotspot on my forehead.

This week I ordered a Shoei j-cruise and a Bell Bullit from Revzilla to try out. The bell is no good immediately. It was off within 10 minutes. The Shoei wasn't bad. It was fairly comfortable. After 45 minutes wearing it while I work (that's a sight to see) I had a red forehead with indented lines from the liner that stuck around for about an hour. Getting a size up would make it too loose so that's not a viable option. I know it will break in 5-10% but don't trust that will be enough. This is an expensive helmet so sanding foam is not something I really want to do or should have to do.

Anyone been in this situation with a helmet and did the 10% break-in fix it? I'm being told by Revzilla the only real option is a full face. Does anyone know of any 3/4 for a long oval coconut? How many people actually shave the foam in their helmets?

I have never shaved the foam, too scary I guess. I wear a full face for protection from elements and safety. My schuberth did take a while to break in. I basically stuffed it full of towels and let it set for several days and it was much better. They do make helmets for long oval heads not sure which ones just search. Good luck

This may help: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcyc...met-shapes.htm

Nexx brand seems like the narrowest open face helmet. Shoei is sort of narrow, but apparently not enough for your head.

Hard to buy a helmet on line and find one that fits. I ended up with an HJC half helmet, fits great. As far as shaving the foam, that's a real bad idea. Kinda takes the DOT out of DOT don't ya think? It's not just the shell that is rated it's the whole helmet combined.

Indeed. I've done it before but not anymore. If it doesn't fit 100% it's not going to happen.

I've never heard of stuffing it full of towels.

I have a fairly long oval head coupled with a long face. I prefer a modular helmet but went thru 4 before getting a Shark Evoline 3. I had to remove a pad that was installed on the forehead but now it's perfect.

I have the same problem with most helmets having a football shaped head also. I've got a really comfortable half helmet and full face, but I've yet to be able to find a 3/4 that fits right. Good luck with your search and I"ll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what you find.

For you all wearing full face or modular, how hot do they get in the summer? I might take a ride up to cyclegear and see what's available.

Here's what Revzilla is saying "might" fit my football head.

Here are the links to the helmets we were discussing and a few more that might interest you as well:

Ive worn modular helmets since i started riding again back in 07. I like them better due to the fact that they dont squish your face in them and you get more air to the face with the visor open. I've ridden across down to New mexico in June last year with it and never had a sweaty helmet or due rag while rolling along. Stopping and sitting in traffic is another story. But thats with any helmet i'd guess.
