My dealer told me specifically to run a good synthetic after a 1000 miles. Of course he pushed Syn-3 but off the cuff siad any synthetic made for motorcycles by a quality manufacturer would be fine.
The synthetic oil you choose does not need to be motorcycle-specific. Tests conducted by Motorcycle Consumer News and American Iron showed that Mobil1 15w50 car oil was every bit as good as the 20w50 motorcycle-specific variant. I used a synthetic car oil (Royal Purple 20w50) in my '96 RK and it now has 109k miles (with the new owner), has 158/158 compression (early 2006 test, same as 1998), uses no oil, runs perfect, and has never had the heads removed, even for base gaskets. My point isn't that the brand is superior to any other, but car oil is fine for an air-cooled motorcycle. HD says car oil is inappropriate because "air-cooled motorcycles run hotter than cars," which isn't necessarily true. My turbocharged car runs about the same oil temp as my '07 SG, and is surely higher when it flows through the turbocharger.

I know many HD riders who use Mobil 1 15w50 car oil, which can be purchased almost anywhere for much less than their V-Twin variant, and none have had any problems, even those with high-mileage.

Since the oil in the motor is MOTOR oil, and not meant to lubricate the trans as in many other bikes, the car oil should work fine. You probably would not want to use it in the trans.

I will chime in on AMSOIL. Nothing better. Hammered my bike for 17 days at 75-85 lst summer to Billings, MN from Florida and back in temps from 38-102 degrees.Covered over 6000 miles. no problems and never used a drop ofoil on a 40,000 mile engine!!!

Mack,
You'd better hold onto that bike . . and the oil. I've never heard of an air-cooled engine that could do that under those temp and operating conditions or under any operating conditions for that matter. You sure a gremlin wasn't refilling it every night.
