Default Trailering on kick stand

Guys, planning on taking the family on a camping trip to a poker run in northern Oklahoma. I have a toy hauler that loads from the side. The bike sits side ways in the trailer. I have not hauled the bike in it since I purchased it. The way it fits inside I'm unable to use a wheel chock. Is it ok to tie it down on the side stand or does it have to be upright?

Maxx

My opinion is no, do not tie it down on the side stand. I use soft ties around the triple clamp and the RATCHET straps to the D-rings and tie it down upright.I also feel that using the handlebars as a tie down point is a no-no....they can and will bend.I also try and avoid tying it down in the back using any crash bars. try and get a soft tie around the frame some where. If a wheel chock is not doable you can nail/screw a couple of short pieces of 2x4 on either side of the front tire. There are many opinions on this topic but this is how I do it. Seven round trips from mid-Mich to SW fla with two bikes in the trailer. Never had a problem. Leaving in the morning (hope my streak lasts)

I would not trailer it on the kickstand. You'd be pushing down on the kickstand and it's not designed to take all that force. Looks like there would be enough room in there to get the bike in upright, no?

Hey Eric,
I think you would be fine strapping it down with the kick stand down. That's what I would do, but if you have aminute or two, I've got a friend that's had more Harley's than I ever will and he will have a definitive answer. Either he or I will get back with you. Also would like to invite you personally to the Oklahoma Gang Investigator's Poker Run for Families of Downed Officers. It's June 2 and will start in Lawton, Ok at Pro-Team Harley. It will come through Blair and Altus as part of the route. All the money goes to the gang investigator's fund for families of downed officers. It's $20.00 for a single rider and $25.00 for rider and passenger. There will be hot dogs, soft drinks and a band. There will be a first prize for the best hand, which will be donated by Pro-Team Harley Davidson. There will be another prize for the worst hand and that prize will be donated by Altus MotorSports. Also a 50/50. Hope you can come. I'll get back with you on my friend's answer. We'll see if he agrees with me.
Larry

I'm back with ya. I talked to my friend and he agrees with everyone else, so looks like I don't know what I'm talking about. (I'll learn to keep my mouth shut) He said to try and keep the bike up if at all possible. For sure you don't want to put much pressure on the side stand if you did keep it down, but he cautions against leaving it down so the short answer is "DON'T DO IT!"
Looks like I'm..........[sm=bustedsign.gif]

Yep - generally speaking, most folks will set it up on the side stand, but stand it up with the crank straps as they secure it. You can leave the jiffy stand down so ya don't forget ta set it back down when ya loosen the ties, but no - do NOT use the jiffy stand as a anchor "point"!!

DO NOT tie it down on the kick stand! Dont even leave it down when you tie the bike down straight up. If you hit a hard bump or pot hole the kick stand can bottom out, then the right side of the bike will continue to unload and the strap can come loose, causing your bike to fall off the trailer or out of the back of your truck. Oh yes it can we've done THAT repair job!!!!

Thanks for al the info. This will be the first time for the trailer. If not for the wife and kids I would be riding. If anyone makes it up to Chandler, OK for the run stop buy the trailer and have a beer on me. I will be riding a black street glide and have a white dodge truck with Harley stickes in the back window.
