Default Correct way to pass?

If you are going to pass another vehicle should we downshift and gun it? Why? Can you just stay in gear? I want to understand how the gearing effects you.

If you dont understand how to pass or how to safely ride near other vehicles you should take a rider instruction class.

Higher RPM = more applied HP and TQ, for the most part, meaning get around the passed vehicle faster.

Sometimes I'll drop 2, if I'm cruising around 2000 RPMs.

I have, but I don't understand the why of the mechanics. Why dropping a gear lets you accelerate faster?

No situation in the same. If you are in low rpm, just cruising around, and in a rush to pass, then you better knock it down a gear or two and get on the throttle. If you aren't in a rush then a light roll-on should do the trick. Don't just try full throttle from low rpm though. These are all things you should be practicing on a nice quiet road away from traffic first. It's all a matter of how fast you need to get around the car, and what your starting rpm's are.

You definitely need to take a riders safety course.
It sounds like you're not in full understanding of a manual transmission.

I completely agree. The military made me take a few of the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) courses. They were very helpful in helping improving skills and preparing you for adverse situations that you may encounter.
