Installation procedure:
You only have two bolts.
a) Install lower bolt and snug it. Then line up shock upper mount. If you see a gap between upper mounting frame and shock mount, then install spacer as needed.
b)Install lower bolt and snug it. If there is no gap and if you need to spread the shock to get it line up with the upper mounting hole you have a negative gap. If you negative gap on your upper mount, spacer required on bottom mount.
c)Install lower bolt and snug it. If no positive or negative gap, then no spacer required on either mounts.
d)Same process on other side
e)Make sure the bushings are installed on both shock mounts
d)Torque per installation manual

Setting Sag:
Also two settings:
Compressing spring or De-compressing spring(increase length).
Start with compressing spring. Ride it. If its too stiff then go the other way(de-compress) until full length of spring. De-compressing spring to its full length give you maximum cushy ride. The chosen spring rate included on the shock must be fixed to the riders weight. No such adjustment like 16th or 32nd of an inch increments on the adjustment nut.

Maintenance:
Howard recommends use clean lint free cloth to clean the shaft. These pair of shock is factory sealed, theres not much we can do to them.

This is all there is to it!

But of all the $700 worth pair of rear shocks out there, I'll still buy Howards shocks again.
Sorry Howard, I am not satisfied with the result from my shocks rebuilding.
I am asking for you to call me. I have been working all day and my phone did not ring from you. I would like the chance to go over this with you, just have an internet connection and a camera. You miss (in my reading this thread) how to do it correctly but I do not know, please just call me. Sunday is not as hectic as the rest of the week and still will be happy to take your call. Get it right by giving me a call and we will be the best we can be. Thanks...

I believe you may be using the Ohlins manual but I specifically asked you not to because IMO it does not work for your HD, I have no way of knowing but I ask you to use my own install instructions, I am 100% sure I included this in your e-Mail, pull your old e-Mail back up and it is for sure on the original invoice:

Invoice w/tracking #

Please read these included install instructions and ignore the ones in the box. Please buy the tools needed. Problems or having trouble, please call me any reasonable hour 7 days a week E.S.T. I want you to have no drama in getting a good ride.

Unfortunately, I am numbered among the unwashed masses using stock shocks (modified to boot!) to imperfectly ride my Harley down the highways and byways of this still great nation.
I must have been bored because I responded to your comment. Anyway, I agree with you 100%. We dont need stinkin precision measurements to dialed in our shocks. There are only two adjustment to be made. Make the spring goes all the way to the top and secure it. Test ride your bike, if it is too stiff, then make the spring move down 1" at a time.
My .02 cents

I must admit these pair of shocks are very well designed. But they are like every mechanical parts out there, they wear and tear. But I dont know if rebuilding makes them function like they were brand new. I've googled about same subject and my thread is the only one showing up at this time.
Howard has already followed up me (thanks Howard) unfortunately I am unable to do so at this time.
I need to do something to these shocks because my tailbone started to hurt.

I realize this was about 60 days ago.A vendor to chase you down to make sure your happy with your ride. What more could you ask for from a purchase?
Yup it's a high dollar purchase.I myself have given all my info. with prompt, reply's.Just waiting on me to dig alittle deeper for the 1k purchase.
Bumps are getting bigger or back is getting more delicate??
Reading all that is Olins,Still needing a little more CONFIDENCE to spend.
If their was a short try-out period to keep or return? The purchase would be easier than rolling the dice hoping it works for more individuals.
Shock sellers,IMOP:Should have try-out sets you ship back and forth for try-out purposes. How many sets would that tie-up? Probably sell more when more buyers have more CONFIDENCE in their purchase.
Just my 2 pennys

Their are some shock vendors and manufacturers that do have a 30 day try or buy and ride quality guarantee. And some will re-build the shock for you if you are not satisfied.
