Okay, it took about 45 min. to put it back together, I did it once and pulled it apart again to check the gear on the clutch (bendix, starter drive) to make sure it lined up with other gear, Thank you OldMike, I will put it back in the bike this weekend and I will let you know how it goes.
I understand the problems with the compensator, I do not have $400.00 for the the compensator plus the cost of the stator, the original owner had it replaced in 09, however it is my understanding that was the first generation of Harley trying to fix their blunder
Yep...for mine they just used the high output starter from a 2010 cop bike....something about the compensator moving if it's worn and making the starter gears not want to engage properly...I hope you get it fixed with the starter, that would be great for you.

I understand the cost factor for sure, but if your compensator is still the original version then you will be spinning your gears (so to speak). That craptastic original compensator has weak springs that causes the starter kickbacks just like you are getting.
If yours has a Screamin Eagle comp, even the early version, then the compensator can be eliminated from the equation most likely.
I am happy to report that the starter works like a champ, thank you again Oldmike, I did some looking at compensator threads, and I am left thinking why not just eliminate the compensator? the twin power is a lot lighter and cheaper http://www.jpcycles.com/product/753-882
