It's the blowout reason which is precisely why I would replace the tire ASAP. Sure a patched tire would hold air, but under heat, stress, and the odd pothole or road hazard, then what's it gonna do? But to be perfectly honest, I think I'd likely replace it "in due course"; not like I'd go outta my way on a road trip, spend half a day at some place just to get it replaced.

If it is just a regular nail in the center of tread, I'd plug it, put in some ride-on or green slime and drive it.
Now, if it was hurt on the sidewall, I'd change the tire. It's up to you tho!

In the case of the OP - if that was my tire - I would rope plug it and ride that sucker.
However, if it bugs you, replace it.

I agree with most, I would replace the tire. It's not worth the chance with all the riding at 70mph on the highway I do.

The front tyre most often wakes up a slumbering nail and sends it spinning into the path of the rear tyre. Especially if Mrs B and I are on tour, would I want to ride a 1200 pound loaded bike at speed on a repaired tyre?!
