over torqued exhaust nuts

Default over torqued exhaust nuts

I think i may have over torqued the exhaust nuts when installing my head pipe. I may have over torqued 30 inch lbs or so, 150 instead of 120. I thought i had my torque wrench set to 120 but i looked at it later and it was set to 145 inch lbs. Could this be a problem with the exhaust studs or the retaining clips?

They may lose up after a few heat cycles. Check them again in a few days.. The stud may back out also if you dnt mess with them for awhile but that another easy fix

I've never seen a HD tech use a torque wrench... don't sweat it as long as they are even.

It was after a heat cycle that i over torqued.

My Indie has been wrenching on bikes full time since 1972 and I've never seen him use a torque wrench on stuff like that.

I can only get a torque wrench on three of them anyway, so I just use elbow torque.

There is zero reason to use a torque wrench on exhaust nuts, just use a 1/4" drive ratchet with a long extension and 1/2" socket. No way you can over torque them. Re-check a few times after hot and then cooled off and good to go.

By the way, 145 inch instead of 120 inch is no problem.

That extra torque has surely distorted the exhaust valve seats and the only options are trade it in immediately or drive the **** out of it for many more thousands of miles without a worry...
