Default SG/EG compared to a Road Glide??

I have been considering changing out the fairing on my SG to a Road Glide fairing. I do my own work so cost is not a big concern. With that said, can anyone with experience on a Road Glide AND an EG/SG give me a honest/unbiased comparison between the two bikes as far as handling is concerned. I keep hearing how the RG is much more stable in twistes and at freeway speeds with wind and passing trucks etc.Trying to find out how big of a difference there might be? I don't want to do the switchand not be able to tell a real difference. I'm probably going to rent a RG before making the switch as most folksseem biased towards the bike they own. Thanks for any info you may have........

I debated for a long time between an EG and a RG, mainly because I was not 100% sold on the looks of the RG (non the traditional Harley look).I went with the RG because I wanted a more secure ride as those trucks roll by. I liked that fairing so much more now that those 18 wheelers and dumptrucks don't bother me anymore - it also has a great layout when you sit on it.The Road Glideis the way to go for handling and stability, no question. Drive it!

30mph cross winds still get me once in a while, however. Probably worse though with a Batwing.

I upgraded from a 1200C Sportster with a mounted windshield.

This article helped make my decision -

Good luck.

You mentioned renting a RG, definitely do that.

As a RG owner I would not go back to a batwing bike. The only disadvantage to a RG fairing is less wind protection as the fairing sits out a little further. Noticable maybe not. I like the radio sitting flat in a Batwing bike as opposed to angled on the RG. With an aftermarket radio it makes some difference. Than again an aftermarket radio on a RG with a flip up screen works well where as on the batwing bike it covers the gauges. The handling hands down is enough for me to continue to be a RG owner.

I owned 2 RG a 1998 & 2001, and now ride a SG. Roadglide handles much better than the Streetglide.

I say definitely rent one first. I have ridden both extensively & I MUCH MUCH prefer the batwing setup myself.

I do like the way the RG handles, but the wind buffeting drives me crazy on my buddies 06 RG(he actually has his for sale, he is going back to an EG). I have a BW with air deflectors & lowers, I get way more wind protection & zero buffeting & I like it that way.

I had a road glide for 3 years and I totally agree with John. The handling difference is marginal at best in IMHO.

John: so are you saying that the RG fairing is to blame for the more noticable wind buffeting or is it due to the stock windshield on the RG? I have heard some RG owners claim that switching to an aftermarket shield (Clearview), makes the buffeting go away? If the issue is because of the fairing itself, that might be asking alot of a windshield...........

I think what John is saying is that the distance between the rider and the fairing on a RG lends itself to more wind exposure. If you've never sat on a RG before, it's hard to explain. Go sit on one and you will see what I mean. The RG fairing is WAY out in front of you.

I think this is another one of those personal preference kinds of things. No "right" answer. I have no problem on my Ultra on the highway. What I really like about it is how quiet it is. I got back on my metric 1500cc cruiser with just a windshield and man was it loud with the wind whipping around me. I would need to wear ear plugs to ride that anymore. So for me, I like the "envelope" created by my batwing and I think it handles the trucks fine.
