Anyone wear all the gear all the time? If so what do you wear in the heat of summer? My wife crashed her bike this weekend and was injured but she had on chaps, a mesh jacket with armor and a full face helmet. She is OK, some road rash and a busted elbow!

Road rash with jacket and chaps? Where is it at? Crashed mine last Oct and with the exception of the busted leg no road rash. Slide on the mesh jacket for 30 feet or so.

By definition, ATGATT riders wear all the gear, all the time. If your wife was already ATGATT and still got injured, perhaps a BRC would be more beneficial to her than riding gear.

ATGATT does not prevent injuries. ATGATT is a way to minimize an injury.

Perhaps knowing the details would be beneficial before passing judgement.

What other details do you need? OP didn't mention anyone else being involved and around here, if someone else is involved, they sure as hell let you know about it. ANY accident where only the rider is the only one involved, is ALWAYS considered the rider's fault. Same as in single vehicle accidents.

Sorry to hear about your wife but had she not been wearing the gear just think about what could have happened.

The easy answer to the ATAGTT question is; if you want to protect it, cover it. Riding in Texas in the summer is miserable when you're wearing a full face helmet, gloves, boots, jeans and a mesh jacket. That said it's nothing compared to the misery caused by just a few feet of bare skin road rash.

In the end it will always comes down to personal choice; what choice will you make?

Sort of true. But sometimes 'stuff' happens regardless of how careful, how many classes have been taken, etc.. At least for us mere mortals.

YOU are supposed to be in control of your car/bike. If no one else is involved, then there's no "sort of" about it. Stop making excuses. There seems to be an over abundance of members who just have to blame someone or something else when they have problems out there.

In 7/71, I was riding on a narrow two lane road bounded by open desert, the first 6 feet or do was soft blow sand, on either side. Approaching me was a pickup truck with a rack built over it's bed. On top of this rack, not tied down, was a 6 foot long fence plank. The speed limit was 45 mph, so we were approaching each other at about 90 mph.

Just as we were about to pass, the fence plank lifted up, a cross breeze blew it over my lane, and it was 'fluttering' around making it's trajectory difficult to predict. My choices were veer left and hit the pickup head on, veer right into the blow sand and crash, or put my head down to protect my face and hope the 'fluttering' board 'fluttered' out of my aim. The board could have missed me, or turned at an angle that would caused it to go through me like a spear, or hit me on top of my head(helmet) as it did. I was too dazed to "be in control of your car/bike".

When the rear wheel started to come around to the right, I overcorrected. Then when it was coming around to the left, I overcorrected again, this time when it came around to the right, I went off the high side. Sometimes 'stuff' happens, regardless of skill or classes taken, that affect "control of your car/bike".

There is always something else involved. And sometimes mere mortals have accidents.

^ Very well put.

As for me, I wear gloves and a t-shirt, sometimes a half helm if I'm feeling extra righteous. Be careful out there, guys.
