I know jumper didn't work for me.

I'm no expert on retrieving codes from that year bike but there are several posts about doing it from some pretty savvy guys. Check out this link by DR. Vtwin:

The reason I suggest carrying the jumper with you is I recall reading that with this method you can only retrieve current DTC's not historic, so if it happened and you stopped could you get the DTC while it was still current? Historic DTC's are cleared after 50 ignition cycles lasting at least 30 seconds.
If you do go to the dealer to have it read make sure you had the engine light come on in the last 50 Ign cycles.

I hope others will add to this if I'm mistaken.

Jumper wire worked fine on my 2002 RK. It shows the historic codes too. Made my jumper wire with 2 insulated female spade terminals. worked fine. Tried again just using 1 terminal to jump the pins. That didn't work. Back to 2 and no problems.
