Default 1987 Tour Glide Classic EVO Screamin Eagle Ignition Issues

Hey Guys!

New Here so go easy!

I have a 1987 Tour Glide Claasic with the Evo Motor, I am getting a back fire when I shift and the Tach is acting all goofy. It has the Screamin Eagle Ignition module on it. What could be going on?

I haven't worked on any of the ignition on any Harley's yet with the electronic ignition modules.

Wanting to get back on the road and "Ride man that's all I want to do is ride!"(from Wild Hogs) lol

Thanks,
Kevin

You are right in thinking it's an ignition problem but, it's not going to be easy to find. It's likely a bad connection. Check and clean all of the connectors, look at the wiring and check for chafing. Look at the pick up to see if it's leaking gunk, usually that and the module either work or don't. Don't forget the basics either, check the primary wires to the coil and also the secondary. I know of a couple of FXRs that had a broken wire on the primary side of the coil that caused the issue you have.

A possibility is the ignition sensor inside the timing cone. They are known to fail progressively and cause all manner of problems before finally giving up the ghost. Mine did, although the bike would run for some months before it finally failed completely. I would start there. As Hasher points out one symptom is the material encapsulating the sensor melting and oozing out. Take a look inside the timer cover. If you don't have one get yourself a factory service manual, which has useful stuff to help you test.
