Default EVO Ignition Module repeat failure?

Hi all,

A few months ago my 66,000 mile 1993 Springer Softail cut off for a few seconds and then wouldn't start the next day. I ran all of the checks in the FSM and diagnosed the ignition module. $250.00 later it was running again on a stock module.
Two months down the road and the new one failed tonight. I have checked closely for shorts, bad grounds/connections, etc. The only other thing I picked up on tonight reading some old threads is that it may be overcharging. Of course I will have to spend another $250.00 to find out!

Any other ideas to try and determine why it now apparently likes to eat ignition modules? Are aftermarket systems more "durable?" I would appreciate any/all opinions.

Can't help you with your problem other than to suggest you stop in at the EVO sub-forum. Lots of guys with good experience could probably get you sorted out.

You can always go aftermarket and cut that cost considerably such as the Ultima 53-644. It replaces your module and pick up sensor at the cam completely. It is half the cost as well.

Speaking of the pick up/sensor at the cam, evos have a history of the cam sensor pick up failing, so you might want to pull the riveted cover and take a look. When they fail, beige/brown goo can start to leak out, but in early stages wont be leaking past cam cover. Could be a cause of your short as well.

If you do pull the cam cover (I recommend you do), when it is time to replace the cover you use a special "closed end" rivet to fasten the cover back on. YD

Thanks for all of the responses guys.

The difference between A and B is never clear, it may be a minor upgrade of some sort, possibly a different supplier. In any event they are interchangeable. Be sure to check your charging system, just in case it is over-charging! There are Stickies in the Tech Electrical section to help doing that.
