thanks mike. i just changed the oil saturday. the manual said to add 3 1/2 quarts, then run until hot and do a hot check on the oil level. that's what i did and it took the other 1/2 quart. in the capacity section of the manual it calls for 4 quarts with filter change.
it is at the full mark on the dipstick when hot right now. do some of you run a 1/2 quartlow or are yours still reading full after adding only 3 1/2 quarts?
I too have a 2006 FLHX and read about the 3.5 qt thing. .. I put 3.5 in mine and ran it, and it took another 1/2 qt too... Every since the forst change I did and figured that out, I just drain it, put on the filter(with some oil in it to charge it quicker), and pour the remainder of the 4 qts in.. After hot it is right on the full mark. So , its 4 qts for me too! And I have yet to have the oil problem although I have the newest Arlen Ness Big Sucker in chrome. No tubes, just some angled drilled holes for the oil to get sucked back into the intake....
Overfilling the oil tank is definitely a no no.
But another possiblity exists withe the fact your engine is breathing freer now.
short of catastrophic internal engine damage.......
In both rocker covers in between the two rocker arms is a metal plate (held by
two bolts). Under it is a umbrella seal and a mesh filter.
Hd had a problem wih the seals failing and letting too much oil laden mist blow by.
It was covered under warranty in the past you will have to check it out.
But if not its an easy change out.
Next thing you might want to consider is a remote breather.
replaces the little tubes going in back of the Air Cleaner with one long tube going
to a remote mounted breather.K&n makes a reusable one.
thanks all. i just tried a set up like 60mike06flhx, i'm going to washington d.c. tomorrow, so i'll see how it goes. takin an extra set of plugs just n case. i did drain about 1/4 quart out of it to see if it helps.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed the same thing, I think. I saw what looked like oil and water mixed, dripping on my cam cover. It was coming from the aircleaner. Hate to admit it hasn't been cleaned in almost 18,000 miles. I thought I was meticulous but somehow this just slipped by me. Anyway, I figured the oiled up AC and condensation were the culprits. A good cleaning of the AC fixed it. Hope your problem is as simple to solve as mine was.
