I was just making a observation. I'm used to riding my bike with the 96ci and this is the first time I've ridden a Rushmore 103.

It's when the piston squeeze the mix from ten units to one. The higher the number the more squeeze. Which makes more power but likes to detonate if all is not set right for it.

I think the first post really had 3 points.
1, the difference between years of the 103 engine.
2, the difference in the price between '13 and 14-present model years.
3, value of current 09, private sale vs trade in.

1, apparently several changes that affect performance positively
2, I don't believe that the price difference can be attributed solely to the engine. There were many more changes that will bump the price up.
3, id do some research before I would assume that a trade in would be the way to go. Probably get a firm idea of trade in value from a dealer or two and compare that to asking prices on ebay, craigslist, etc and finally looking at the valuation sites like KBB and Edmunds

This may help some with that.

Trade my 2013 with a 103 for a 2016 103 wet head. Big difference in the two. Not saying the 2013 was bad ,the 103 in my 2011 was the exact same engine as the 2013. . The 2016 would leave it behind with ease.

Sounds like they made some good performance upgrades on the 2014 and up touring bikes.

Better cams, better infotainment unit, bigger front shocks 49 mm compared to 41 mm. Better saddle bag lids with easier opening. All are HO. Street glides are still dry head or no radiator but the ultra anything is a wet head or with radiators. Linked abs brakes are awesome anybody who says they will never have them jus hasn't rode a bike with them. Bike stops on a half dime with them. Cruise control standard equipment.

Is there a difference in performance between the 2013 ultra with a 103 engine and the 2014-2016 ultra with a 103 engine? I am thinking about getting a newer bike but notice at my local dealer that there is a few thousand dollars price difference between the 2014-2016 ultras and the 2013 and older ultras with the 103 engine.
My bike is a 2009 with 101,000 miles. I think my best bet would be to trade it in. I don't think anyone would want to buy a bike with that many miles on it. The engine was replaced under warranty about 26,000 miles ago.

Thanks for any input.
Imho you may want to consider bumping your's up to a 107 with cams. The only other thing I would look at in your bike is the trans main shaft seal and bearing. Also depending on how you rode it I'd check clutch too. The cost to upgrade your bike vs trading it in for a beating might make you rethink your position. A107 combo will spank a Rushmore 103. They do run well though.

Bdtaylor, I just swapped my motor from 96" to 103ho from a 2015 bike...It's stock and it feels like my 96" felt with the 26h cams in the low rpm but the big difference if the power band is there everywhere, it doesn't die off like my 96" did...I had rode the regular 103 but opted to wait until I could find a 103HO...you could get the cams and hearwork done on your 96" and achieve about the same as a 103HO in its stock form.
If you trade bikes, I would say A 2014 or new would be a good choice instead of the 09-13.
I opted to just upgrade my engine , it cost me about $1900.00 after I sold my 96" engine. I am very happy.
My mechanic which was working at a Dealership until a year ago said HD put cams in the 103HO it needed for the regular rider. Mix of 255 and 254 or something like that.

I went from a 13 103B to a 15 103HO (not a wet head) and noticed more performance, but of course that 13 had the balancer in it. If your bike still has "eyes" (looks good) & you decide to sell your bike, try to find an exporter. They'll give more bux than a dealer, regular wholesaler, or even most private sale people. It will be on a boat & out of the country with a different odometer reading in a matter of days.
