Default fl-xied-10

I believe I've already reviewed these, but I feel the need to update. My bike started it's life with a heavy breather and freedom slip-ons and a stage one flash. This year I added a decated headpipe so I figured I should get a little more fuel flowing. Not wanting to have to deal with a tuner, and not being worried about squeezing every last HP out of the bike, I decided to use the FL-XIED-10s.

At first I was happy with the XIEDs, but felt the exhaust was a little to open and I felt a loss of low end torque, but gained some high end power. Now I should mention that I had the XIEDs set at the recommended setting and could actually smell the fuel coming out of the exhaust. I tuned them back some and felt they were doing their job.

After a while I got to the point where I was ready to pull them off and go back to the stock header to regain my low end torque since that is where a touring bike should be pulling. First I decided to tune the XIEDs back a little more just for the fun of it. Bike ran better. I pulled the XIEDs all together. Bike ran great. No popping, no hesitation, not running hot. Keeping decated headpipe!

Sorry for being so long winded, but to sum up, I have nothing against XIEDs, and feel they work as promised, but I do want to make people aware that sometimes more fuel is not what the doctor ordered, and the second point is that people ask on here all the time if you need a tuner after doing a stage one. I can tell you that it's not needed. Bike runs better than ever. Could it run better with a tuner? Yes. Does it run better and cooler than stock without a tuner? Yes. To each their own, but I couldn't be happier with the bike right now.

the point being you also have a stage 1 flash.

like wearing suspenders and a belt- you really only need one.

My older 09 flhtcu responded well to VIEDS which i found 50% setting to be the best with no smell of fuel from the exhaust either.

The Vieds got rid of the lean surge it had @ low load part throttle settings , made throttle response a bit crisper along with smoothing out the idle too.

Lost approx 1-1.5mpg but still good at 42+mpg on avg in mostly open road country cruising with little in town traffic too.

Didn't seem to make an diff in engine & or exhaust temp but that could be because i already had an ultracool oil cooler w-twin elec cooling fans along with Wards twin cooling fans that target heads & upper cyls both @ the same time.

Collectively together those 2 cooling mods reduced oil temp 50deg f in summer heat which resulted in 5-6 significant improvements in engine perf & overall riding comfort too right off the bat all @ the same time.

The 2 cooling mods & Vieds is the best $$$$/time/effort i have spent on the bike thus far vs results obtained.

They do state the XIEDs should work well with stage one flash. I don't believe the flash really adds much fuel. More like wearing a belt on pants that fit good anyways.

Yup that's what I came up with when I tried it, ended up going with the Power Commander V and once I got the basics it's the simplest device and what a difference.

aside from fuel delivery it alters spark advance curve and rev limit- what and how much depends on the specifics of the download.

the xieds merely cause the ecm to add more fuel usually 8% or 10%
- the rev limit remains the same, the advance will stay at factory settings- the added fuel is likely to allow the spark to advance further than otherwise as pinging is reduced.

Just "adding fuel" does not mean more power- over rich mixtures produce less power as a less complete burn is taking place- it is a balancing act with many many factors to consider

I've had better than 5 successful years on xieds- I am fiddling around with a free V&H FP, so far no "advantage" and there are some interesting effects; pops and boobles and surges here and there, nothing horrible but not as smooth as with xieds- still altering settings

So my '15 Rushmore ran great off the showroom floor. I am one to fiddle with things. I thought I'd try to improve on a perfect running bike, (previous bike had no less than 5 dyno tunes, it never could compare to my new ride in smoothness).
The Xieds had zero effect on the new bike and I ran them turned down and turned up. About 4 tankfulls ago I suddenly experienced very bad decel popping going through my Fatshotz/catted header. They were set at 12 o'clock.
Any ideas? I couldn't stand it any longer and turned them both down to about 1/4. Will see what happens next ride. If still popping, they are going in the recycle bin.

The beginning of your post is your first mistake. By removing the CAT you did not have to "add more fuel".
This isnt the fault of the product, you just were asumming wrong without any data, like from a DYNO. If anything the Breather and Slipons would cause a lean run in SOME engines.

If anything, removing the CAT on a stock Rushmore bike will lead to a possible slightly richer fuel mixture from the stock 14.6:1 to 14.3:1.

Nightrider actually will tell you if you decatt reduce the setting from 50 to 25 as the removal of the CAT will slightly increase the fuel mixture on its own, as once the CAT is removed more air gets into/mixes into the exhaust and this tricks the O2 sensor to add a bit more fuel.

I personally run non adjustable XIEDs on my bike but not for the purpose of, I think it needs more fuel, I did want to stop my lower right leg from burning, so the DECAT and XIEDs stopped my leg from turning red. In that respect it worked, I also feel a little less "stumble" at parking lot speeds and is worth the slight loss of MPG..
Other then that my bike is stock. I have unplugged them on a few recent trips, to experiment. Meaning half the trip unplugged and half plugged, the heat returned. SO they are plugged in. Anyway, the difference slight but its there and I will continue to play, heck, its why we own bikes!

BTW, the reason I chose non adjustable XIED is simply who am I to say without a dyno what a proper setting is? I figured they will do what I want or I wont use them.
The very most the XIED OR VIED can increase fuel mixture on a RUSHMORE bike is to 14.0:1 which is why I just went all the way. Anything inbetween is just guess work and I think in that case better for a dyno.

Just for others sake who is reading these posts, you have VIEDs not XIEDs.
If you decatted Nightrider suggests 1/4.
I run the NON adjustable XIEDs and happy with them, super smooth, zero issues, NEVER a pop, nothing. You will not notice a huge change, they can only adjust to a MAX of 6% more fuel.
Im really not a believer in the adjustable (VIEDs) ones for the reasons you and others mention.

The most more fuel an XIED can add on a Rushmore bike with narrow band sensors is 6%. For this reason I chose the non adjustable XIED instead of trying to guess at settings .
